“Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth;
give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.
Most of the time, prayer for me is a free conversation with the Lord. Every once in a while, however, I’ll craft a prayer in my journal. A while back, I wrote a prayer describing the heart of Jesus and asking Him to give me this heart. Today, I felt moved to share this prayer with you and invite you to pray it as well:
Dear Jesus, make me wholehearted. Create in me a heart like Yours.
Give me a heart that is fierce yet compassionate. Your love for me is fierce. You relentlessly pursue me out of love. You fight my battles. You have done great violence to the powers of darkness. You gave me life, and my life is Yours. Give me a heart of great strength to fight for others with the same compassion that flows from Your lion’s heart.
Give me a heart that is driven yet balanced. You will stop at nothing to bring Your truth to all Your people. Your story is a story of hard work and dedication. Your breath designed the universe. Your hands designed every part of my being. You are the Author of truth. Your mind no one can fathom, and yet You are so approachable and stable. Give me just a fraction of Your ability to work and create.
Give me a heart that is firm yet loving. With You, my feet are grounded on solid ground. I will defend this ground but will keep Your love as my light in the darkness. Your Word teaches me, corrects me, and trains me in Your ways. Your ways equip me to live my life with endurance and tenacity.
Give me a heart that is confident yet humble. I can only find my true identity in You. I am not my own. I am Yours and You are mine. Help me remember that nothing is possible without You. I am your humble servant. I am a servant to all.
Give me a heart that is complete yet growing. Through You I am complete. Your love makes my heart whole. Conversely, You have given me great capacity for learning and growth. I ask for Your knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Make me better today than I was yesterday.
Give me a heart that is realistic yet present. You have given me life. I will learn from my past, focus on my present, and plan for the future.
Give me a heart that is honest yet tactful. You speak to me in truth. You lead me down the path of righteousness. Help me be truthful and open in all my interactions with others. Give me an assertive tongue to speak words of life like You.
Give me a heart that is disciplined yet at peace. Your life on earth was one of great discipline. You lived a life of great mastery, grace, and peace. You are the best of all men and I push myself to be more like You. Amen.
